Who We Are
OtherSide Entertainment is an independent game studio with offices in Concord, MA, and remote staff throughout North America. Our mission is to create deeply immersive games that draw players into richly imagined worlds; games that empower players to choose their own play-style, making their experience unique and personal; games that encourage players to team up with their friends and weave their own shared narrative; the kind of games that are powered by our players’ vision as much as our own. Together, we aim to evolve the “player-authored” tradition of Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex – all games developed by the company’s founders, Paul Neurath and Warren Spector.
The Opportunity
We are looking for a Lead Level Designer to join us in forging new experiences in the immersive simulation space. Strong candidates for this role will be masters of the craft of level architecture, decoration, flow, player perception and the moment-to-moment experience, systemic or generative level design, and level scripting. Strong candidates will also have a firm understanding of game development pipelines and scoping, a proven ability to collaborate with art and engineering, and a passion for the genre and the kinds of experiences it offers.
We at OtherSide are proud to have crafted a unique culture that values smaller teams and celebrates tight collaboration. This is an environment that encourages and empowers individuals to make the kind of impact that is simply impossible when they are cogs in a giant machine.
What We Need
The “Thick as Thieves” team is building a new kind of immersive simulation game focused on multiplayer action-stealth. We are looking for candidates who want to help us push the boundaries of this genre and deliver an experience players have never seen before. This effort is powered by exceptional level design that is deeply systemic, intricate, and above all innovative. We are seeking a developer who is eager and able to bring both veteran experience and fresh imagination to this challenge.
This position will report to the Lead Designer, who will guide you on the game’s vision and collaborate with you on the expression of that vision through level design. As a member of the design team, you will also be expected to collaborate with other designers in other specialties, giving and receiving feedback to help shape the whole experience and ensure its consistency and authenticity.

- Drive accountability for quality: Organize and lead regular internal playtests of your levels; validate your designs against typical players at the earliest opportunity. Collect, analyze, and incorporate feedback from these playtests and from QA, external playtesters, and community members.
- Lead an open creative conversation: Collaborate with other designers, engineers and artists on your level designs, maintaining the game’s vision, and pushing the innovation of game experiences.
- Collaborate with project leadership: Partner with discipline leads and production to balance level development needs with the product schedule and scope.
