Who We Are
Otherside Entertainment is an independent game studio with offices in Concord, MA, and remote staff throughout North America. Our mission is to create deeply immersive games that draw players into richly imagined worlds; games that empower players to choose their own play-style, making their experience unique and personal; games that encourage players to team up with their friends and weave their own shared narrative; the kind of games that are powered by our players’ vision as much as our own. Together, we aim to evolve the “player-authored” tradition of Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Thief, and Deus Ex – all games developed by the company’s founders, Paul Neurath and Warren Spector.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Senior UX Designer to join us in forging new expressions of the immersive simulation space.
Strong candidates for this role will be experts in guiding and supporting the player experience in 1st-person action-stealth games, bringing a deep understanding of the uses of interface elements, leveraging diegetic feedback and affordance cues through environment art, animation, audio, and visual effects, and designing control schemes that work for players of any skill level or ability.
Ideal candidates will also have a firm understanding of game development pipelines, scope negotiation, a collaborative approach to cross-discipline collaboration, and a passion for the genre and the kinds of experiences it offers.
While our team includes some of the industry’s top developers with a heritage of award-winning AAA games, we are proud to have crafted a unique culture that values smaller teams and celebrates tight collaboration. This is an environment that encourages and empowers individuals to make the kind of impact that is simply impossible when they are cogs in a giant machine.
What We Need
The Thick as Thieves team is building a new kind of immersive simulation game focused on multiplayer action-stealth. We are looking for candidates who want to help us push the boundaries of this genre and deliver an experience players have never seen before. This effort depends on exceptional UX design that empowers players in a richly simulated, systems-driven immersive environment where player customization, exploration, and invention are at the heart of the experience.
This position will report to the Lead Designer, who will guide you on the game’s vision and collaborate with you on the expression of that vision through UX. As a member of the design team, you will also be expected to collaborate with other designers in other specialties, giving and receiving feedback to help shape the whole experience and ensure its consistency and authenticity.
Job Responsibilities
- Fully own the design, documentation, and implementation of all user interface features and user experience flows, and champion UX principles throughout the game.
- Participate in the design and critique of UX-oriented features including core player motion and cameras, world systemic features with diegetic feedback, and major gameplay systems such as AI and combat.
- Collaborate closely and effectively with cross-discipline partners to bring complex, immersive player experiences to life.
- Collect, analyze, and incorporate feedback from the team, external playtesters, and community partners.
- Express the game’s vision while balancing the needs and goals of your craft against the project schedule and scope.
All Qualified Candidates Will Possess
- 3+ years of experience in user experience design for PC/console games.
- Strong command of 1st-person animation, controls, camera, and locomotion conventions and techniques.
- Expertise with Unreal Engine 4/5 UI pipeline and Blueprint scripting.
- Eagerness to both receive and provide regular critique across all areas of design.
- Strong communication and coordination skills, highly detail-oriented.
- A growth mindset, and self-starter attitude.
- Passion for making and playing games!
Exceptional Candidates Will Also
- …have shipped one or more AAA games with a multiplayer focus, or designed for multiplayer modes in such games.
- … have a strong understanding of visual design principles including information hierarchy, affordances, and accessibility
Additional Notes
This is a full-time, remote working role, with competitive compensation and a full suite of benefits. All team members in leadership roles, like Production, may be asked to occasionally visit our MA office (or elsewhere) for key meetings, as part of their job responsibilities.
Our people-first approach to game development celebrates diversity, and strives to create a safe and inclusive working environment where everyone is treated equally, with dignity, and with respect. We highly encourage candidates from diverse and under-represented backgrounds to apply, even those that may not directly meet every qualification listed for this role.
